Main, lat. Moenus, bedeutendster r. Nebenfluß des Rheins, entsteht unterhalb Kulmbach aus dem Weißen und dem Rotten M., von denen ersterer auf dem Fichtelgebirge am Ostabhange des Ochsenkopfes, letzterer zwischen Fichtelgebirge und Fränk. Jura entspringt, mündet nach 495 km Mainz gegenüber; von der Mündung der Regnitz auf 340 km schiffbar; die Schiffahrt durch Schleppschiffahrt und Kanalisierung des Flusses von Mainz bis Frankfurt sehr gehoben; Flußgebiet 27.378 qkm; Nebenflüsse l.: Regnitz, Tauber; r.: Itz, Fränk. Saale, Kinzig, Nidda. Verbindung mit der Donau durch den Ludwigs-Donau-Main-Kanal. – Vgl. Zoepfl (1891), Schanz (1894), Faber (1895).
